fyi, the "COB 1010 Dot Ave" should be City of Boston, 1010 Mass Ave. in Roxbury, just past the Dorchester boundary of the Fairmount train overpass.

Adam, I don't think that that is a new rack but perhaps one already existed there. The new racks they are installing are as far as I know only the lollipop type like that in the picture in the post.

Is this rack the rack you mentioned at the Strand Theatre? It looked a bit rusted and old but I've never seen it there before though I didn't look before either.

Today the city will join the ranks of Paris and Barcelona with the launch of the first high-tech public bike-sharing program in the United States, forcing such cities as San Francisco and Chicago to look here to see chic alternative transportation in action in America. One critical difference between SmartBike and its European counterparts is the size of the network. When Vélib debuted in Paris, it provided 10,000 bikes at 750 locations.

That was actually a replacement of a lane that's alwasy been there, though it is much improved now. It was originally installed by the DCR. That and one over by Ruggles used to be the only lanes in Boston. Now we got Commonwealth Ave! Rode on them the other day. Next should be Mass Ave. over by BMC, but there's a battle going on between PWD, the administration, the advocates and the neighborhood. I can't even begin to tell you who's on what side, but livablestreets is engaged in it.
