Let’s get more bike racks for Dot

DotBikeNews, dotbike advocacy Comments Off
city_rack.jpg The Boston Bikes program has made a great start on it’s pledge to install 750 bicycle racks on city side walks and property over a three year period with 250 installed last year. Dorchester has received quite a few of these racks but we should work to get more.

Below is the Map that the city is using to track bike requests and inform the public of their status. The thing you may not realize by looking at this map is that there are four whole pages of land marks indicating rack requests. To see that you will need to view the larger version of the map and navigate with the next and previous buttons near the bottom of the land marks pane.

If you have an idea for a good place for a city bike rack you can either let us know using the contact form available via the link at the top of the page or you can make a request directly to Boston Bikes via this link to their request form also available from the Boston Bikes home page.

Anyone Can Be A Bike Commuter (Really!)

A lunchtime bike commuting workshop is being offered free on Thurs March 12 at 12:30 in the Dorchester House Multi-Purpose Room.

The Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition (MassBike), Massachusetts’ statewide bicycling education and advocacy group, is offering a one-hour workshop on the basics of commuting by bike and bike safety. This workshop is intended for people who are not currently bike commuters and are interesting in learning more. MassBike also offers more extensive training, both on- and off-bike, for people who want to take the next step.
The workshop covers the basics of bicycle commuting, from health and safety issues to specific concerns such as choosing the best route to work. The workshop includes a 40-minute presentation, an 8-minute video, and a 10-minute question and answer session for employees with specific questions or concerns.
The presentation covers these topics:
Why commute by bicycle
Equipment: how to choose the right bike and gear
Choosing the best route
Getting started
Riding safely in traffic: the law is on your side!
Preventing theft of equipment
Cycling at night
Cycling in bad weather
Winter cycling

If you are interested in scheduling a training at your workplace, contact Shane Jordan, Director of Education and Outreach, at (617) 542-2453 or by e-mail. Scheduling is flexible and can be tailored to your organization’s specific needs.

The March 12 workshop is sponsored by Dorchester House’s Sustainability Team, DotWell, and the Dorchester Environmental Health Coalition.
