Thirsty Riders, Boston Bikes and Bike Maps Oh My!

DotBikeNews 1 Comment »

Just in case you haven’t been keeping up with the recent flurry of postings and event happenings that many of the various Boston Area bike organizations and blogs have been sending around and that I have been trying to keep up with on our events calendar here are a couple of reminders/updates.

First and IMO the one to definitely have on your calendar is the rescheduling of the 1st MassBike Thirsty Riders club from tonight to next Wednesday.  Same time – 6:00 p.m , Same place – Coogan’s pub @ 171 Milk St. just a different day due to the lovely weather we’re having.  As a complete aside – allow me to kvetch that I had tonight free and currently have 3 other events next Wednesday vying for my attention.  Ah well.

Second is tomorrow Thursday 1/29 at 7 p.m. an update on the Boston Bikes Program by Nicole Freedman hosted by Livable Streets at the Rabb Lecture hall in the Boston Public Library, Copley Square.

Third the Boston Bikes Program is asking you to review their Boston Bike Map and give them feedback.  You can download the map and find a link for feed back on their web page.

All these events (well I guess the bike map review isn’t really an event) and more can be found in the events calendar to the right of the page.

Enjoy the weather.

BU and Craigie Bridges Update: January 27, 2009

Boston-Area Cyclists: Please Attend This Meeting!

The DCR is holding this follow-up meeting for the first two projects in the Accelerated Bridge Program. The initial public meetings on the BU and Craigie Bridges were very well-attended by the cycling community. When the DCR presented plans that did not adequately address bicycling, the negative response from cyclists was immediate, and the DCR heard you! The DCR has now promised a series of steps to ensure that bicycling needs are better addressed on these bridges and throughout the rest of the program. At this meeting, the DCR will show us their revised plans. We need lots of bicyclists at this meeting to give a strong response to whatever we see, good or bad. Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 6-8 pm, Kirsch Auditorium, Stata Center, MIT, 32 Vassar Street, Cambridge.

Bicyclist Safety Bill Signed!

This report from MassBike.

Governor Patrick Signs Bicyclist Safety Bill

Yes, it’s true: the Bicyclist Safety Bill is law after 8 years and 4 legislative sessions — perseverance and grassroots support paid off in the end!

MassBike played a central role throughout the history of the bill, from drafting the language, to lobbying for its passage, to the successful 2006 effort that ended in a veto, and now to a law!  MassBike thanks our many supporters in the House and Senate for their persistence, and thanks Governor Patrick for recognizing that this law will help make Massachusetts a healthier, greener, more sustainable state.

This is a great victory for cyclists, and it was a true team effort, ranging from MassBike to legislators to you, our members and supporters.  Without all your calls, emails, and letters to legislators and governors over the years, this could not have happened.  You let the politicians know that bicyclist safety is an important issue, and they heard the message!  So thanks to all of you.

Governor Patrick signed the bill into law yesterday.  Coming on the heels of a year that saw gas prices soar to over $4 a gallon, huge increases in ridership on public transportation, and a surge in interest in bicycle commuting, the law will help more people, particularly new and less experienced bicyclists, take advantage of bicycling as an affordable transportation option.

Among the many changes the new law makes, it adds police training on bicycle law and dangerous behavior by bicyclists and motorists; explains how a motorist should safely pass a bicycle; explains how a motorist should safely make a turn in front of a bicycle; makes “dooring” (opening a car door into the path of a bicycle or other vehicle) subject to ticket and fine; permits bicyclists to ride two abreast when it does not impede cars from passing; and adds legal protections for bicyclists who choose to ride to the right of other traffic. Click here for the full text of the new law.

We will post guidance on exactly what the new law means on the MassBike website (www.massbike.org) as soon as possible.

This great day would not have happened without the help and support of our friends in the Legislature, many of whom threw their support behind efforts to get the bill signed.  Representative William Brownsberger, who assumed a leading role in moving the bill forward immediately upon taking office two years ago, kept the pressure on in the final months, weeks, days, and, yes, even hours, leading up to the signing.  Representative Kay Khan, the House sponsor of the bill, who was instrumental in garnering the support of dozens of like-minded colleagues in the House and Senate – including Representative Robert DeLeo, Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, and Representative Frank Smizik, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture – to urge the Governor to sign the bill.

The Bicyclist Safety Bill was originally introduced in 2001 by now-retired Representative Anne Paulsen, who worked closely with MassBike to draft a bill designed to modernize Massachusetts’ bicycle laws and improve bicyclist safety.  Paulsen championed the bill until her retirement in December 2006, when the bill passed the House and Senate only to be vetoed by the outgoing Romney administration.  (Anne then joined MassBike’s Board of Directors where she has continued her efforts on our behalf.)  Following Representative Paulsen’s retirement, Senator Pamela Resor (who herself just retired) took up leadership on the bill, filing the version that was ultimately signed into law by the Governor.

Now that the bill is law, our work really begins.  We will start getting the word our to bicyclists, motorists, and the police, so that we can begin to see the improvements that the new law makes possible.  And this is not the end of the road for bicycle legislation: the law and the needs of bicyclists continue to evolve, and MassBike will continue working to ensure those needs are met.

Yep it’s still cold and icy out there with more snow on the way.  But just remember the days are getting longer and the Pro Bike racing season is just getting under way to provide motivation for riding whenever and however you can.

I don’t recommending outfitting yourself like the guy in this picture.

I found this photo on the home page of Icebike a site dedicated to the winter cyclist.  Check it out for lots of good tips, equipment and some extreme winter biking storys.

Even though it’s cold outside doesn’t mean that there aren’t bike-related activities and meetings happening.  Make sure to check out the event calendar to the right for upcoming meetings and events.

First Annual Boston Bikes Update Report: January 29, 2009

LivableStreets Alliance will host the first “Boston Bikes Update Report” by the city’s Director of Bicycle Programs, Nicole Freedman.

The public meeting will be held starting at 7 PM in the mezzanine conference room of the main branch of the Boston Public Library. The focus will be on future steps needed to create the “world class bicycling city” that Mayor Menino has promised. There will be additional discussion about what could be done to significantly expand the cycling population — and its political influence — by attracting “traffic intolerant” bicyclists, by installing low-cost bike-friendly infrastructure in all parts of the city, and by setting up programs to assure that low-income and non-white communities feel included, among other strategies. Thursday, January 29, 7 pm Boston Public Library, main branch at Copley, mezzanine conference room.

Accelerated Bridge Program: January 14, 2009, 6pm

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has scheduled a public meeting to discuss projects the agency will undertake as part of Governor Patrick’s $3 billion Accelerated Bridge Program. DCR projects in the Accelerated Bridge Program include the repair or replacement of 29 bridges and preservation work on an additional 50 bridges. At the meeting, DCR officials will provide an overview of the projects, outline the community process, and highlight the schedule of upcoming public meetings. DCR held public meetings earlier this year to discuss the repairs and rehabilitation work planned in 2009 on the BU Bridge and Craigie Dam and Drawbridges, both of which cross over the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge. Other Charlers River Basin projects planned for 2009 include the Magazine Beach pedestrian bridge in Cambridge and the Mystic Valley Parkway over Alewife Brook in Somerville. The meeting will be held at the Boston Public Library, Rabb Auditorium.

MassBike is working closely with the DCR to ensure that these projects work for bicyclists, so please consider attending this meeting to show public support for the inclusion of bicycling.
